Editing Tables with Foreign Keys

For example, a database contains the following tables:

When you connect to the Payments table in Excel, you get a ready-to-use editable table:

You can do the same with SaveToDB 7. However, this requires three lines of configuration.

Editing Data from Views and Stored procedures

For example, a database contains the following procedure that selects data from the Payments table:

CREATE PROCEDURE [cf80].[uspPayments]
    @AccountID int = NULL
    , @CompanyID int = NULL
    , @ItemID int = NULL
AS
BEGIN

SET NOCOUNT ON

SELECT
    *
FROM
    cf80.Payments p
WHERE
    COALESCE(@AccountID, p.AccountID, -1) = COALESCE(p.AccountID, -1)
    AND COALESCE(@CompanyID, p.CompanyID, -1) = COALESCE(p.CompanyID, -1)
    AND COALESCE(@ItemID, p.ItemID, -1) = COALESCE(p.ItemID, -1)

END

When you connect to this procedure in Excel, you get the same table as for the source payment table!

SaveToDB 8 analyzes views and stored procedures and creates the configuration automatically.

Grant the VIEW DEFINITION permission on the desired views and procedures to enable this feature.

You can get the same result with SaveToDB 7. However, this requires six lines of configuration.

Editing Tables with Many-to-Many Relations

For example, a database contains the following tables:

Example Diagram of Many-to-many Relations

You can add the _State_ column to the connected EmployeesTerritories table in Excel and refresh data.

The add-in sets 1 for each pair in the _State_ column. You can set 0 to delete the row in the many-to-many table.

Note also, the add-in uses names instead of identity values automatically.

So, you can easily insert a pivot table based on the table loaded from a database to edit data:

To assign a manager to the territory, set 1. To remove the assignment, set 0.

Note that you can use the Save button on the pivot worksheet directly.

You can get the same result with SaveToDB 7. However, this feature requires three procedures to save changes.

Checkbox Fields

SaveToDB 8 formats bit fields as checkboxes using the conditional formatting:

Also, you can format any range as checkboxes using a new Form Wizard menu.

Users can double-click on such cells to rotate values.

You can get the same result in SaveToDB 7. However, this feature requires several steps to configure conditional formatting.

Application Installer

SaveToDB 8 includes a new Application Installer that replaced SaveToDB Framework Installer.

You can install, upgrade, and delete SaveToDB Frameworks and built-in applications:

You can install it using the Application Installer, as shown above.

Business users can create workbooks using the Application Workbooks wizard, as shown above.

You can create a workbook to configure features using the Application Workbooks wizard.

You can use this with SaveToDB 7. Select SQL Server Management objects in the Data Connection Wizard.

Simplified SaveToDB Framework

SaveToDB Framework 8 includes only four tables and one view:

  • xls.objects
  • xls.handlers
  • xls.translations
  • xls.formats
  • xls.queries

Moreover, the framework has the same object names and structures for any database platform.

See Upgrading SaveToDB Framework 7 to SaveToDB Framework 8 for details.

Improved User Interface
